Program 5 Monitor Flamethrower "Zippo" Tutorial
Step 9: Weathering & Accessories
Super Tip= Super Detail=

Close up of the starboard flamethrower mount. Notice the tiny Playboy magazine, M-16A1 Rifle, M1 helmet, and the canvas turret cover resting on the forward deck.

I added numerous scale C-Ration cases behind the deckhouse bar armor that I printed from my PC, then cut and glued them over mounting board to give them a sturdy shape.
Stern view of Zippo-2. Notice the rain streaks, which were made using white and yellow watercolor paint. I enjoy weathering with watercolors because if you make a mistake, you can easily fix it with just a little dab of water.

Starboard view of the deckhouse. Notice the numerous C-Ration cases stowed behind the bar armor.

Close up of the port Flame mount. Notice the muddy jungle boot print on the deck and the watercolor rain and rust streaks on the bow. You can also see a Water Lilly floating in the water just under the bow.

Overall port view of the completed boat.

Close-up starboard view of the deckhouse. Notice the location of the .50 Cal Machine Guns and the additional M60 Machine Guns mounted on top of the Mark 48 turrets.

Close up of the rear deck. Notice the rolled waterproof canvas turret cover behind the stern Mark 48 gun turret.

Look closely at the chain locker on the stern and you can see bird droppings and rain streaks simulated with watercolors.

Top view of the bow and flame mounts. To read a story of what happened in the "heat" of battle to the starboard flame turret, read the story of Tom McNallen, Flame Gunner onboard Zippo-2 in 1970.

Notice the rust on the bow.

Nice view of the starboard bow.

The boat captains’ name (JD Colbert) was printed in yellow with a blue background from my PC, and U.S. Navy was added below per COMRIVFLOT ONE directives.

Close up of the starbord gun mount.
Notice the numerous fuel and oil cans stowed on the stern.
Notice the open C-Ration case on the deck which you can see the individual meals inside.

Overall stern view of Zippo-2. This boat was a pleasure to build and kudos to Masterpiece Models for casting such a fine model kit! Order your kit here!
